Bent Rudder

While sailing in the Atlantic off the Florida Keys a sudden crash came, after realizing we lost steering, sails were dropped and damage was asessed. An object (we believe) had missed the keel and came up between the keel and skeg, destroying the skeg and bent the rudder up into the hull. I need to replace the skeg and repair / replace rudder. I would rather repair if feasible and, if little or no integrity of the rudder post is being compromised. That is if the costs are significantly different. Any info on tricks or helpful hints to removing the rudder and skeg would be helpful. Also any info on prices and where to get would be great too. Reply here or email me at markhelle@go.com Mark

Man have I been there!

I broke off my rudder on my 31 1984. The reason I broke off mine was from running aground in a big blowing storm (anchor failure) You have 2 choices 1)You can buy your rudder from foss foam right now (the original builder of our rudders)Around $1100.00-$1200.00 but this rudder will just drop right in and your on the road/water again. 2) You can rebuild what you have (as I did) It was not easy at all to rebuild the rudder as the right foam is not available. I chose to hire a GOOD welder for the post. I rebuilt the rudder (foam part) with west systems as a filler. I don't really know the cost of the rebuild but I can tell you It was hard nasty work and it was expensive. If I had it all to do over again I think I might have just paid the $1100.00 just to be done with it. Good luck and sorry for your luck.

Repairs

Caught your post over in the Cherubini section. As I said there I had a shop in Tarpon Springs repair my rudder. They are American Boat Works, link below. I had other work done also so do not know how much the rudder alone cost.
