This weekend I was forced into a low bridge and hit about 6 inches from the top of the mast. The front stay, which was new, parted and the mast now has a bow halfway down from the spreaders, which also took major damage. Has anyone ever had any luck or is it possible to correct this. The mast is not twisted. No other apparent damage. This is a 1974 Catalina 22. Are new masts available? I'll be calling Cat Direct tomorrow to find out if they have them. Anyone out the have a mast?...I'm devastated...I've worked like a dog on this boat and refuse to give up on her. She still looks like the day she was made. I now understand why some sailors simply DISPISE power boaters.

Where?

I'm sorry to hear abut your misfortune. Please tell me where you hit a bridge with a C22 as I sail out of the West River myself.

Plenty of mast manufacturers

Hey, @#()$* happens! Luckily, there are several mast mfgs out there that can probably replicate you existing mast. Hall, Forespar, US Spars, and Selden are some that come to mind. You will need dimensions of your current setup. Make some phone calls, and don't forget to check used marine chandleries - you just never know what you might find (there have been a LOT of C22s made). Another way to look at it is if you have to repace, you might as well upgrade! Can you say Carbon Fiber? Just kidding - you'll find something that will work and you'll be on your way. Best, Trevor

Repair Possible,

Several years ago a member of our club bent the mast on his Northstar 25 while unstepping it in prep for winter layup. Fortunately for him we have a large welding and machine shop in the area that caters to the oilfields. They had a press and a highly experienced operator that took the kink out without to much diffaculty. I believe something was said about this method being used to staighten drill stem. To this day there is no indication that the mast was ever bent, it has been raced hard and endured heavy weather without failing. I think it would be to your advantage to scout your area for a shop that could handle the job. Echo Gulf sv Sea Raven
