My Pearson 323 came with an old autopilot that isn't working properly. It holds a course under power but not under sail. I opened the unit and there is air in the compass about 1-2". Benmar wants about $400 for a repair. Since there seems little to lose I was thinking of drilling a small hole and filling the compass with mineral spirits. Since the unit is old I am worried about spending too much money on a repair. If I am spending money the new GPS controlled units seem attractive. Comments or suggestions?? Anyone with a working control unit/whole system for sale?? Thanks Tom

Spring for a New One!

I would seriously consider a newer autopilot. The Raymarine ST4000+ wheelpilot should work fine and provide a lot more functionality. New units are frequently available in the $800.00 range. I recently replaced my older ST4000 with the ST4000+ MarkII unit purchased on Ebay for less than $600.00. Installation is a snap and well within the capabilities of most boat owners. Jon McClain

Mine is "course setter 21"

I think that I will buy a new autopilot at some point in the future. Benmar is still in business and they have parts and do repairs. Google search for the address. Tom

Send me an email at e0550@comcast.net and I will let you know what I have when I have the time to look in my storage.
