Hello all and hope everyone keeping well. I have a Beneteau 285 with 2 blade folding propellor. Hoping to change this to a 3 blade fixed and wondered if anyone would know the correct size for this boat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Terry.

Prop size and pitch depends on a number of factors. The three most important are blade clearance, engine, and transmission ratio. The best way to address prop size is to pick a prop manufacturer and contact them with this information.

Moving from a 2 blade to a 3 blade prop will have an adverse effect on sailing speed while making motoring only slightly more effiecent. If you can get to hull speed with the current engine and prop you'll see little advantage going with a three blade prop.

Ditto Dave's suggestion to visit your local prop shop with the information they need to determine the right one for your boat. Our's came with a three blade fixed and remain very pleased with it's performance. No racer here, but I always keep the transmission in neutral while under sail, so minimal drag. Also very effective in maneuvering our 35,000 pound beast.

Thanks for replies. Most propellor manufacturers here want to sell their props without giving size upfront. I would just like to know size so I can choose my own . Thanks Terry.

Try this company, or at least ask their opinion. The Campbell propeller is well respected in the world of fixed sailboat props.

One "size" prop from one company, is not necessarily the same size you'd get from some other company. The width of the blade, it's pitch, where the "meat" of the blade is. Find a prop you like, THEN CALL THE COMPANY FOR THEIR SIZE computation.
