Decide for yourself

Do some reading on the subject. Know what kind of conditions to expect then decide. There are plenty of books available detailing trips around the major capes. Read up as much as you can before you spend money on any boat. The 43 you're thinking of is a new boat and if her lines are as they suggest, a fast boat as well. Is she built to stand up to the conditions of the southern ocean? I can't help you there. Even more important is, are you able to stand up to the conditions you'll experience? You're planning a trip that's going to be very demanding on both yourself and your boat. Your question suggests that you may not have the experience to do so without risking your life. Good luck with your research and the trip should you decide to go.

Boats for a circumnavigation

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply. There are of course a lot of other boat that I am also looking at, Rustler 36, Island Packet, Pacific Seacraft 40, Najad, Oyster... its a huge subject. The beneteau seems to provide a lot of boat for the money. However, i must say the Beneteau 43 is quite beamy and will also ahve to be specially outiftted for a large ocean crossing. Just wondering if you had any suggestions, your personal opinion on the boats to consider... With regards to Beneteaus, I came across one other weblog, where someone did a circumnavigaton in a First 400. anyway, what is ur opinion on beneteaus for Off Shore / serious blue water crusing? Budget: USD 250,000 Length: 39-43 ft. thanks B

A Beneteau anything

would not be my first choice for a solo circumnavigation. They are great coastal boats, but are not suitable for bluewater, not because they're not built well enough, they are, but their underwater shape, cabin, cockpit and rig is not the best for bluewater. They're designed and built for charter work in the Caribbean, not for sailing the Southern Ocean.
