I have a 2008 Beneteau 40 and have always found it difficult to shift into and out of reverse. The shift lever on the transmission is smooth and moves in and out of gear easily by hand with the cable disconnected. I am wondering if i should replace the cable? Anyone else have this problem? The control lever location is in a tight spot and I have to pull the lever forward to get it out of reverse; tough when maneuvering in close quarters. Thanks for any suggestions.

The shifter cable is probably binding in its sleeve. Its possible that there is a rather tight turn in the cable somewhere. Try looking for that or a cable clamp that as crimped the sleeve. Check the cable clamp at the exit point of the cable nearest the transmission lever too.
There is a possibility that there is corrosion inside the cable. Lubrication may help, but the cable may have to be replaced.

Had a similar problem. The cable bracket in the engine bay was binding and causing problems with the shift. It was also out of adjustment as a result and I got proper shift (F-R) after adjustment of the cable clamp position. I found that by dissembling the shift cable from my Volvo Teleflex shifter cable at the helm, and pulling it back about 4 feet I was able to clean and grease the cable adequately. It now shifts very smoothly.

Now I have tomorrows project - as long as I don't get stuck in the engine bay! Thank you.
