I just got around to reading the 8/16-17 thread about Beneteau hull cracks. Just discovered same on my 1994 Oceanis 400 when I hauled in November. Looks like cracks in a hard-boiled egg. Is the water protection system the culprit? What did others decide to do about Beneteau?? Is this found in other boat brands besides Beneteau? These are not blisters, but cracks which go 1/4 inch into gelcoat and glass. thanks.

what hull cracks????

Jim; I searched the archives but couldn't find any reference to 8/16-17 hull cracks. I own a 1994 Beneteau OC400 and your post made me sit up straight. On my last haul-out, (3 years ago)there was no evidence of cracks like that. I'd planned to haul out next fall, but now I might do it much sooner. I'm going to ask my diver about it, too, you can bet. How has Beneteau responded to this?

More information needed

Jim, Are the cracks localized or generally over the bottom. You said 1/4" deep. Is that accurate? If so then they are through the gelcoat and into the laminate. Check to see if there is a barrier coat on the boat. Sometimes if the barrier coat is not allowed to cure properly you may get cracking like you describe but only to the depth of the barrier coat and bottom paint combined.Has the hull been moisture tested? You may want to take a scraper and open up at least one of the cracks so that you can see just how deep it really is and if it is through to the laminate. Dan Sheehan AMS

More info on Beneteau Hull cracks

Dan, The cracking is localized. I have one Starboard and one Port significant crack like this (6-30 inches, below waterline). I have not confirmed depth of crack, since it is covered in paint. It definitely goes deeper than barrier coat and paint. I have a soda blast of the entire bottom scheduled for ASAP, and then I will know more then. When I can, I will try and open one crack with a scraper. I read in an archived thread that back in August there was discussion among Beneteau owners about this type of cracking. Were there any further actions, opinions on the "water barrier" theory of this cracking?? Thanks for your interest. Jim Dahl

REsponse on beneteau hull cracks

I have not yet been in contact with Beneteau, but I will after I soda blast the bottom. I want to know just how extensive my problem is, and then approach Beneteau.

Safe in CA

Reports I have gotten from others involved in this problem seem to indicate it is limited to those in cold climes - the freeze-thaw cycle seems to provoke this reaction. Jim Dahl jjdphd@aol.com
