I purchased a new Beneteau First 25 S. It arrived from France last week. I am having trouble figuring out the linkage for the dual rudder system. It appears they have changed the way the rudders links to the tiller. Has anyone have or seen the new linkage and can they halp. Any help is apprecated.

This boat is located in Ottawa Canada.. I guess it is number two! Brand new it arrived from France two weeks ago. I am trying put on the dual rudders. They changed how the tiller and rudder linkage goes together. I just thought someone who has the new linkage might be able to explain . I have already contacted my broker. I guess they will have to go to Marion or France for an answer. You certainly have a full website--lots of info so thank you for that.

Hhmmm... was this a "some assembly required" by the buyer deal?

THe First 25 has external rudders on a tiller. The broker is 300 miles away. So yes I guess some assembly required.

You seem well experienced with this boat. Great pics. Could you please tell me how you anchor the rudder to the bracket. Mine has a nylon bolt whiscrews into the bracket and abuts tightly to the rudder. There were no elastic cords which I see on the beneteau parts list and seems to be used on Beneteau 25.7. Do you use elastic cord? Is there a risk of the rudder coming out of the bracket. Your response would be greatly appreciated.

Geoff,

Since the 1980s Beneteau has used a cassette system to hold transom hung rudders to the boat. In this system, the rudder blade is lowered into an aluminum cassette shaped for the blade. In all cases, the top of the blade is widened to make it IMPOSSIBLE for the rudder to fall all the way through and down the cassette.

The system works well, but sometimes a slight vibration between the cassette and blade might be felt. Beneteau has used two schemes to deal with that.

The system the First 260/25.7 used was a loop of shock cord that laid between the widening at the top of the blade and the cassette. This absorbed the flutter and worked well for years. Our boat has it, you can see it in the pictures below. We don't notice flutter.

Some boats (like the older First 235) used a nylon screw that clamped the blade to one side of the cassette. That was its only purpose; it did not keep the blade from falling out. On the 235 it looked like this.

If you say that the current versions of the First 25s have the screw, I would not worry about it at all. But is it interesting, the first boats did not. Here is an early hull at the Chicago boat show. You can see the bands.

Thanks for your response I guess I don;t need to worry about it falling out under sail. I am attaching pics of my bracket and linkage for info.

You're welcome.

One other tip. Log into the Beneteau spare parts system and order a spare set of rudder bushings. You can see on in place in that first picture, around the bottom of the rod under the cassette. These are wear items, and last somewhere between 3 and 10 years, depending on how sensitive you are to rudder slop.

Keep them in your spare parts kit until you need them!

You will love the boat.

On my B235, that nylon nut screwed into a dimple on the rudder. Several dimples allowed adjument in the rudder's height. I think it was nylon so people would not crank down on the bolt and break into the rudder's finish.

I bought my 235 used, so I was never sure if the dimples were built into the rudder from factory, or were a result of the screw being tightened into that area! ;^)

The nylon screw (delrin technically I guess) is clever but often self-tightens to the point you needed a special tool to get it loose. On my 235 my prized possession was the amazing wrench the original owner made (he owned a tool shop) for that express purpose.

Clever. I think the dimples are the latter as my rudder is smooth----no dimples.
