I have a beneteau 49 where the float switch in the shower sump does not work. I was told by the dealer that this is an ongoing problem and they want to convert the present automatice system to a simple manual system. For some reason the switch keeps on blowing out and beneteau just sends replacements that don't work. Has anybody else had similar problems and do you know what the best solution is?

What's wrong with this picture? On it's face, it sounds like they admit there is some unidentified problem with parts but keep making the same mistake repeatedly - there is a behavior category this fits into.

If it's the float switch to which you refer that is defective, your choices for alternative types are numerous and varied.

bar soap is oftern the culprit

Have you tried banning bar soap from the boat? Liquid soap doesn't contain "binders" that clog boat shower drains. If you've ever cleaned your shower sump you know what I'm talking about. Bar soap should be banned from all boats (along with spray suntan lotion and glass wine glasses).

I have a 43 with the same setup. This mini float switch is a tight fit as already know and we had one replaced when we got the boat a year ago. Since then, we've had no issues.

There is a manual overide switch under the sink that will turn the pump on if the float switch doesn't work and you need to pump out the shower sump. I use it to drain the sump down beyond the float switch's "on" point.

B46 w/ same problem

I am in the middle of the float switch issue in the aft head on my '07 46. Picked up a new float switch last week. It comes with stranded, untinned, bare wires. I crimped on spade connectors (w/ heat shrink tubing) & tested it before putting it in the sump. I checked continuity & the switch works just fine - up circuit closed, down circuit open.

I plugged the new switch onto the terminals & the pump energizes whether the switch is open or closed. I had to unplug the switch & manually use the on/off switch to stop the pump. Called the dealer who said that the relay attached to the manual switch is bad. And now it's another $45.00 for the relay and I will see what happens this weekend.

BTW - I checked the original switch and found a bad crimp at the spade connector. (I probably broke it when disconnecting.) So I crimped on a new spade connector & I now have 2 good switches. I intend to use the new switch because the rubber grommet on the original is somewhat distorted and may not form a watertight seal.

Regards.
