I am in the market for a Beneteau 285 and am DESPERATELY trying to get a measurement of the height of the boat (not including the mast) I require this to get a carrier to quote a price for shipping. Surprisingly none of the sellers I have contacted have been too intersted in helping me out with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am making the move up from a Tanzer 22, which I love to head out by myself a lot in. Does anyone have any advice on wheather or not the 285 would be a boat that I could still do this easily in? Cheers, Cory Z

Easy to single hand

I had a 285 in 2001 and 2002 before buy Dragonfly B331 in March 2003. The 285 was a pleasure to sail. All controls lead to the cockpit, so it was easy to single hand...easier than the Starwind 223 I had before. Can't answer the height question. Might check the Beneteau site for older models. There used to be a 285 site maintained by Hal. http://www.first285.com/ It's still avalable, but I don't know how recent the information. Good luck. Mark

Bridge clearance based

I just wanted to agree with Mark, its a very easy to single hand design, extremely responsive and just fun. I also moved to a B331. To your other question, the cheat is to use bridge clearance which is 42ft, a mast which is 30Ft gives you 12ft (seems too much but draft is 5ft-3). This should be the cabin top to the bottom of the standard keel. I'm sure the trucking company needs to know for overpasses which are typically at 14 ft. You should be safe with that number and they're going to confirm it anyway. Good luck and reef early.. Mac
