After considerable assumptions, suppositions, half drunken research and testing, I have come to some important conclusions regarding sailboat electrics. First of all, all cable must be the largest that is available on the shelf at West Marine or the general electric medium transformer plant nearest you. Secondly, all connections must be made with a custom built $10,000 crimping tool available at a single manufacturer somewhere in the frozen north east. Thirdly, disregard all shorter connections recommended by the manufacturer and go with the longest possible run of largest possible cable. And fourthly, and perhaps most important of all, all connectors connecting bolts terminals and cable must be rendered in solid gold. Anything less than that risks too great of a voltage drop and poor performance by the charging equipment, and miss leading data furnished by the battery monitors.

You certainly can't go wrong with that appraoch ............... however you may find your boat overweighted and your wallet underweighted.

It's more a matter of doing a detailed analysis of what you want at the load end of things as well as good installation practice.

Of course. All the above was intended to elicit amusing responses. I have certainly found my wallet underweight and the boat is definitely overloaded!

I had a very difficult time wiring all the data cables between the chart plotter, the gps antenna and the AIS with 8 gauge wire. But it was definitely worth it. I won't have to rewire for at least a year.

You should try it with 0000 cable next time....

The larger the wire, providing it is installed low in the boat, can allow you to reduce Draft by cutting a similar weight from your keel!

COLD here in south Louisiana.. I am still in the half drunken research phase.. I have to report that use of the Kirkland St. Croix Island Spiced Rum (available at Costco) is a fine way to do this research. I can't remember what size my wire is.. but the engine cranks fine!

FURTHER BEMUSINGS BT RUMMAGE SAIL Shortly after my wife left the boat this morning I was at last able to test the latest Maxwagger. The results, which I will publish soon, have been expressed, in the most convoluted mathematical Spanglish I could find. I'll post pictures and graphs as soon as I can make them (up). Of course to test the Maxwagger I had to connect it to my friends pugleblugger, which I've borrowed quiet often. It may be old but can certainly still render some useful data. There are newer more modern puglebluggers available but that are quiet hard to come by, being very expensive.

I went ahead and soldered the circuit board of my chart plotter directly to the battery terminals. Can't see a darn thing with my head stuck into the battery locker but no worries about ground faults. :D

I would have done that too but the 1,000,000 cfm exhaust fan for the wet cell battery fumes was too loud.

Whatever you do just don't let the magic smoke out of the wires. :naughty:

I used to buy a rum in St. Croix for $0.99 a bottle; the locals said it was real good for removing stains from a driveway. Kloudie I know the one you drink is good stuff but your posting brought back some memories. I think it was called Cruzan rum and it could tear out your guts and produce a massive headache. That was more than 30 years ago but it seems like yesterday.

If you get the next grade up of Cruzan, it is pretty good stuff. Heck, even the "sailors-grade" stuff is good.

"Someday my ship will come; 'Till then I'm cruis-in on my Cru-zan Rum". Them Eastport Oyster Boys song.

I remember buying Cruzan in the BVI back in the '80s for $0.99 for a fifth.. If ya mixed it into a painkiller or a rum punch, it was fine.. A couple of stores here in Baton Rouge carry the "good" Cruzan .. I remember Mr. Caldewood's rum too.. "...you sleep like a baby, mon.. no hangover..." is what the guy filling the bottles told us. uuhhhh.
