The bolt on the alternator adjuster is hard to get too as it’s from the back. I think it’s a 12 mm head. Has anybody have any ideas on how to get to the bolt as using i can’t get any movement on a wrench due to the coolant pipe. Does this pipe need to come off.

Regards

Kevin. Looks like the boat the end of the arrow is loose.

On my Perkins I used a socket and a zero degree wrench extension.

If it's not the oil filter, it's something else back there. Mine requires a deep socket on a ratchet with a universal joint in between. Keep trying and you'll find something that will conect you. Photo it once you get it so you can refer to your phone as to how you last did it years ago.

Thanks Ralph you are right it’s always something in the way. I will try the zero wrench and give that a go.
Love the site great to get feedback taking my frustrations out of owning a boat

Keven, it appears that your alternator is using a shorter belt to keep it clear of the bulkhead at right. Yikes.
The inherent issue with the M30 design is the lower pivot for alternator used two separate bolts/nuts and on some boats the rear one is inaccessible. There was a 'tractor mindset' at Perkins.
For my friend's Catalina 320 I had the lower mounting bracket modified with a new rear pivot arm, now FORWARD of alternator rear leg plus a compression tube connecting this to the the front arm so a single long bolt is used instead. There's a standard sliding bushing in rear alternator leg to transfer the bolt's compression as is automotive practice. You can loosen that bolt from the front and the rear nut got a wire bail welded on to limit it's rotation.
This is a higher current Iskra alternator fitted. The leg spacing is a match to the Yanmar/Hitachi mounting scheme.
