First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has respoded to my previous posts. The help that is available here is priceless. This is a picture of what the interior of our boat looked like when we bought her. It was covered in old, 1970s style carpet that STUNK! After considerable work, we got the carpet removed and ground off the remaining adhesive. This took about three weeks. Then we primed it with KILZ and yesterday painted it with gloss deck and porch enamel. See second post for the after pic. Once again, thanks to all. I am sure we will have numerous future inquiries.

the KILZ

had to be fun. Were you able to find your way out without help?

Clean up

My son, his buddy and I ripped the hull liner out of our H23. We removed all screwed in wood trim and some hardware first (cut around the load bearing stuff). Took the better part of 3 hours. Try pulling it out of the top of the bow locker and you'll know I'm not exaggerating. Anyway - my question - I'm left with a lot of hard ahesive with fury strands of carpet remnant/backing sticking out from it. Worse on the roof than the sides (different adhesive?). How did you get rid of this junk? I've tried some mild solvents with little to show for it. Don't want to create a gooey mess. I'm probably going to try sanding next, but I'm concerned about getting into the fiberglass and damaging the boat itself. The sides are so thin they visibly flexed when we were pulling the carpet off. It seems like paint or wood trim is a better idea than just replacing the stupid carpet and setting myself up to do it over again in a few years (months?), but I need a cleaner surface first. Knew this would be a mess going in, but had to deal with the mold/mildew or the First Mate was going to mutiny.

Might try 3M Adhesive Remover, it's a mix of

solvents, benzene & toluene, will not harm fiberglass. Also used a product from Jasco (hardware store) made specfic for removal of glued down carpet, used it on concrete, may be too harsh. Plastic putty knifes for scrapers, newspapers & rags, and lots of elbow grease. Ventilate well, try not to breathe too much of fumes.

What we did

For the remaining adhesive (and there was alot of it), we used an electric drill with a plastic grinding wheel. We just ground off the old adhesive. They cost about $9.00 at Wal-Mart. We went through two of them in the interior of our boat.

Looks good, however...

If you want your boat better insulated and warmer looking, you may want to add indoor/outdoor carpeting to the side bulkheads. I used a soft low-pile indoor/outdoor beige carpet, looks good, is mildew resistant (marine quality)and can be gotten very cheap at Lowes Home Improvement.

Thanks Bell

Thanks for the info Bell, but if I sugested putting carpet back in to my wife, I would be looking for a new first-mate! Where wqe sail, we have had no problems with it not being warm enough.
