Before and after pics of new pait job

Hi all.
I just finished painting my 1977 Vega # 3175.
I stripped her down to the gelcote, primed her with 2 part epoxy,
sanded that down, rolled and tipped a coat of awlgrip, sanded THAT
down, and rolled and tipped a 2nd coat. While it was labor intensive
the total cost in materials was under $300 US. I'm very pleased with
the results. View the before, during and after pictures at:

Enjoy!

Andy, although the pics are a tad too small to see the gleaming polished
finish, she sure looks pretty! Did you paint the deck too? Cheers,
Trevor

I didn't paint the deck, just the hull. Racing bottom next year!
FYI if you click on those pictures at ANDYT13
you can see the full size images. There are a whole lot more at
www.andyt13.com on the 'images' link that show the whole process.
Best!

Hey Andy!

Great photos on your website. Mind if I "Borrow" some for the AVA site?

I can't believe you sanded awlgrip between coats. While painting Lealea, a squall came over the mountains from windward half a beer after we finished laying on the first coat. Next morning it was all bubbled up and we had to sand it off. That paint is hard as diamonds! Took three of us all day to get back down to the gel coat. BTW, its been eight years and the paint still looks great.

Hey Chuck.
I'm happy for yuo to use the pics but please give me the credit and a
link to www.andyt13.com. Much obliged! Re: sanding the first coat: I
didn't sand it OFF, just smooth with 320 (like the directions say to
do) to get my few drips off. Whoever suggected more brushing thinner
(I think it was Alan Critchlow) many thanks. That did the trick in a
big way. With 25% thinner it "flashed" (as you put it - we yanks
say "kicked")MUCH quicker and ran barely at all. Anyway you all are
wonderful and I thank you.

I always give credit where credit is due. Great pics andy and I wll certainly place a link to your site.

Its been quite a while since we painted Lealea but as I recall we followed the directions exactly concerning the mix. We were working in typical Hawaiian Springtime conditions: 70%+ humidity, 85 degrees farenheit. We did not sand between coats. I had help from one of the local boatyard day-laborers who specializes in paint and varnish work, Tall Tony the Samoan, whom I paid with $10 an hour, lunch and a case of Budweiser a day (Which I, in turn, helped him drink). The results were impressive and no one believed that we had not sprayed. As Tony said "That's great paint"

Aloha,

Chuck
