This came up in the O'day forum and I thought I'd get a wider audience of opinions here. It seems that O'day was notorious for using only washers under the winches. I made up some backer plates from 1/4 inch aluminum plate. I'll need to replace the bolts with longer ones so I figured I may as well pull the winches off and re-bed them. Like many people on this forum, I began using butyl to bed hardware on my boat so my question, anyone see a problem using it in this circumstance?

The only suggestion I would recommend is to take a look at MaineSails procedure for bedding with butyl. You may want to chamfer the holes.

That is a great article. I just got my rolls of Butyl tape that I'd ordered.

Most winches have a slot under for water drainage, make sure you leave it open.
