Hi all,

Bedding most hardware is easy - what would you do with this:

Would you fill the hollow somehow? I want to bed it with butyl tape - but clearly I would need a bunch to get all 4 of these done. This is for my bow pulpit. When I pulled it there wasn't anything in the base - much water got in through them.

Thanks!

Call your local commercial roofing company and ask for some scraps of the thickest EPDM roofing they have. Make rubber gaskets to fill the void, if you need more then one layer, glue them together with the glue from a bicycle tube repair kit, clean the rubber really well, it has some type of release material on it so the rolls don't stick together

I would seal the hole with 5200 or epoxy putty... then use the butyl under the fixture if you want...

It may be best to carve a wood plug to drive snugly into the hole as a backer to hold the sealant so you can get it packed in there fully.

In my opinion, The epdm rubber will not allow the base of the fixture to become solid against the hull when the bolts are tightend, so that it will always have a bit of movement, and in turn will eventually allow water underneath it

The fix that comes to mind is to fill most of the void with a masonite 'washer' inside the recess and with over-sized holes for bolts. These will provide a cavity around the bolts to prevent the butyl rubber from being squeezed out.

Thanks all for the advice - I think I have an idea of what to do now.
