Bedding chain plates with Butyl Tape

Thanks to Main Sail I have become an advocate of Butyl Tape for deck hardware. However, for chain plates, I still use a flowable adhesive like BoatLife for filling the void around the vertical tang and the butyl tape for the deck plate and screws. I couldn't figure out how to fill the voids with butyl tape. Am I on the right track with this?
