I am sailing the Beaufort area in Oct. and would appreciate any suggestions on sights to see,anchorages, dos and don'ts. Thanks in advance.

Be sure to try
the marina there in Beaufort. Either River Bend or River Forest, for some reason I can't seem to recall the correct name. And be sure to try their oyster fritters. They also have golf carts that are street legal, and you can explore the town, shop etc. Pretty nice place to visit.

Cape Lookout lighthouse and Lookout Bight...
From Beaufort, go out Beaufort Inlet and run outside to Cape Lookout, duck behind the Cape to Lookout Bight (about 9 miles from Beaufort Inlet). Good, protected anchorage, good scenery, good view of Cape L. lighthouse, good beaches if you go ashore. Can return to Beaufort on the inside if you are shallow draft (check charts), or return by ocean as you came.
Did this on a friend's Mac 26S about a year ago. We started from a state ramp just west of Morehead City.

We love it there, mostly Beufort, we launch at a state ramp in Beufort and sail around Shacklford island. Lots of great sights and nice people, don,t forgrt about Pamlico sound, we were there also but not by boat and we plan to sail there this year. As a trailor sailor I have the option to put in any where and not spend days sailing to the location. The neuse river is also great to sail on I did that for a day as well out of New Bern on a Cat. 309. Moore head city is more commercial than the others but still a nice place but the ICW there is very shallow sailboats avoid that area. Alan

I know nothing of sailing in the area being only familiar with it by land. I have found Beaufort to be a beautiful, classic sailing village. However, I would cast my vote for Ocracoke Island, an enchanting and funky outpost there in the Cape Hatteras string of islands that I would consider a "can't miss". Daily at lunch at the Jolly Roger Pub, I have found myself surrounded by sailors from all over NC, who have docked for lunch and a "walk about" on this tiny island. Google it for photos. The local Musuem dedicated to Captain Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is just a short walk away and although, tiny, has a wealth of knowledge about his exploits. Ocracoke Inlet was his favorite anchorage although Beaufort also has sites dedicated to him. I'm envious!
