Beating the heat on water.

I work and play outdoors but sailing, with the sun coming from all directions, the exposure can be brutal. Add to that the last week has seen regular highs hitting 90 here on the Maine coast. Some of us beat the heat with awnings. Anyone have a sun awning? Are you thinking of getting one made?

LATIFA's awning is a serious affair. Hung high it gives full headroom below. Side panels can be raised mid-day for ultimate ventilation, lowered as the afternoon sun, still hot, goes low.

Protecting brightwork, cooling teak decks, LATIFA spends the year on the water usually in the Caribbean in the winter. The awning is just as useful at our high latitude during the last week of hot humid weather.

Most of the working sailcraft fly awnings as soon as they're moored. Crews and passengers have had their fill of direct sunlight by then. WHEN AND IF's awning (left) can be lowered to the toerails.

The Pinky schooner, PERSEVERENCE is owned by a canvas fabricator. She just built this awning. I shot this at 5:00 pm, rowing by (sweating bullets). She's an experienced canvas designer and has provided good afternoon protection while keeping the forward end raised for good ventilation on the hook or mooring.

Our awning, decades old, saves us on hot days. This was in the Cape Cod Canal a couple seasons ago.

For afternoons we have to improvise by tieing panels, the mizzen staysail - whatever is handy, as the sun goes low. The sailing dinghy, if rigged, does the trick:

We're headed off sailing most of the month of August. It's for sure that we'll be flying our awning, even under sail.

We have the typical combination of a dodger and bimini on a "modern" sloop, with a "connector" piece the zips between them to close the gap. We usually only use the connector for rain. The dodger, which I can stand under, and the bimini, provide lots of shade.

The awning "trick" that I saw and that most appealed to me was the arrangement on Offshore Spar's V-boom. There are several grooves molded into the boom. One set accept a sail cover that has a luff-tape like feature on the edges, and is slid in from the aft end; these grooves are inboard of the lazy jack attachment points. A set of grooves along the edges of the V, outboard of the lazy jack attachment points, accept awning panels that have a luff-tape like feature on the edges. Then, there are LED lights built into the boom for evening illumination under the awnings. Very slick.

For a small trailersailer, an awning is the foundation of overnight camping. Multi-purpose (rain and sun).

Nice pictures, as expected of you, Tom.

12' X 18' blue plastic tarp from Wallmart for me. very versatile between the masts and over the boom. while sailing not so much need what with sailing on fresh water and endless refreshing dives over the side available. i have a custom awning with poles and sides made by a sailmaker. never use it, the plastic tarp is more practical with aeolus's layout.

Seldom gets that warm around these precincts. Very satisfied with the standard dodger/bimini on our boat, which gives plenty of weather and sun protection while underway or at anchor.

What a collection of absolutely beautiful girls. I would love to walk the docks where they are slipped. We got some single slotted bolt robe guides from Ranier Industries and attached them to the boom. We have two bolt roped pieces of canvas that slide into the grooves and tie off. Works ok. Out here in California, its fiberglass and convienience. I have a total of ONE piece of teak on deck. Thats the handle on the companion way cover. Super nice pics. Thanks

My shade cover is an embarrassing hodge-podge of an affair.
Still, the air conditioning keeps up.

Being on the hook most of the time in an area subject to sudden squalls occasionally accompanied by some very strong winds, I went a slightly different route.
I picked up some Sun Shade Screening and just tied knots in the corners because I didn't expect it to last very long. After two years or so, I made new ones (the stuff is very inexpensive) and had a canvas maker put proper edging on it and grommets. They've been up about 6 years now and we don't worry about taking them down in high winds because the wind blows right through.

Sailboat awning = $2,000
High quality tent material of the same size made into an awning on your boat = $200.

Whenever the words "sailboat" or "marine" are added to an item's description, add a decimal place to the asking price. Another example:

West Marine stainless steel screw (1 count) = $9.99
A bag of the same exact SAE stainless steel screws from Walmart (10 count) = 9.99

Sailrite sells phifertex that is 98 o/o sunproof and allows wind to blow through. We made up 2 rectangular panels that can attach to the sides of the Bimini for shade or privacy. Cost us about 120 $ in 2005....

Latifa or Lateefa is a feminine Arabic (لٓطِيفٓة) given name which means "gentle" or "pleasant".

Here is our cover that connects to our bimini and shrouds:

We have used it for 18 years now. I takes about 7 minutes to set up and to strike.

We also rig a wind scoop over our forward hatch, and made a stern sun shade that ties into the back and one side of our bimini when we are anchored/moored stern to the sun.

While we enjoy beautiful Fall/Winter/Spring weather here in sunny Arizona, mid-June to mid-September can be a mite toasty. I added an awning between the dodger top and the bimini but left a strip open so I could see above it (at the sails) as well as below it.

"Also screen panels that attach to the edges to block direct sun but allow air through"
Very often on our sail back to the marina, the sun is blazing down on the back of the cockpit. Have you ever sailed with the rear panel in place as in the picture? Just wondering.
