Beached in Virginia

Was camping last weekend at Virginia Beach when at about 3:00 am the wind whipped up and rain to beat the band. Almost lost the tent. Noticed about 7:00 am police and fire entered park and seemed like a lot of action, so we strolled down to the beach and as I climbed the stair to cross the dunes noticed a mast wagging in the wind that was not there the previous evening. Got a real sinking feeling as I got closer and realized the 44 Beneteau "Fulfillment" was awash in the surf. I guess they got ashore ok but am curious as to the story behind this. Sure was a sad sight, conditions were 35-45 north winds straight on the beach, probably 5-6 waves. Anyway here are some pics just as a reminder. Stay safe this summer.

from the picture it looks like their anchor is still on the bow...interesting.

How much damage is common with a beaching like that?

Local news report said his anchor broke?? But I did see one there, maybe a back up. Top spreader was broken

Often lots of damage. Usually "can" be repaired, but depends on a lot of factors

This seems to happen a few times a year on the east coast. I hope that Virginia Beach is nicer to this guy than Norfolk was to the other guy. This is a sad situation.

It would be interesting to hear the whole story on this one.

The OP said there were 35-45 kt. winds directly blowing on shore. Probably a good thing the sails were furled.

With storm sails they should be able to sail off a lee shore.

With the report that they broke their anchor etc. it is certainly possible that they were not trying to make a passage by motor in 45 kt winds. You are assuming that they had adequate space etc. to sail off the lee shore when they discovered their anchor had "broke.". In all probability the error was made long before the need to sail off a lee shore in horrible conditions. Observing that their sails are furled and that is the cause of the foundering seems a bit naive.

What would you do now ?

Never mind how it got there and don't cop out by saying call your insurance company. Assuming you own it outright and there is no hull insurance, what would you do right now if that was your boat sitting in the surf ? Would you be looking for a heavy duty towboat ? How ? Would you keep one person on board or on guard on the beach ? Would you be stripping valuable sales, electronics, etc. ? Would you hire a temp security guard ? In short if it was totally your responsibility what would you do ?

Broken top spreader, maybe a failed shroud. It looks like the headsail was furled in under pressure as it looks pretty tight. Maybe they feared a dismasting under sail and elected to allow the boat to run aground. Is the bottom sandy?

Check hull integrity and rudder. If good, temp the standing rigging if needed. Dredge and kedge during a good weather window? Expensive, and I'd wonder what that 'ol EPA might have to say about the dredging, but it'd be better than the alternative, I think. I'd take her straight to the nearest haul-out available.

I think I'd still want to dredge some first, if it was possible to coordinate the two.

Deal with it. If she isn't floatable, it would depend on what she needs to limp.
If she could not limp, I'd salvage everything I could.

I'd be very interested in knowing how this boat gets saved and hauled to deeper water.

Has some sort of anchor been deployed to hold her from getting tossed ashore?

From my comfy landlocked armchair, I'm guessing that if the hull integrity is still good, the easiest salvage would be to aggressively careen the boat using a heavy Zodiac attached to the masthead, and a powerful or well-anchored towboat to pull her out.

Yep. No use trying to figure out what happened based in 3 pictures. I thought there was a little bit of fruitcake in all of us.

I wonder what ever became of that boat....I asked around during the summer and folks who frequent the island knew nothing about it
