That only matters because it was the captain's actions that initiated the rescue efforts. He would be the salvor or the one who commissioned the rescue efforts. If the vessel is saved through someone else's, voluntary efforts, they could have salvage rights even if the captain was on-board.
"(3) specific elements: marine peril to the vessel being salvaged; service voluntarily rendered, not required by duty or contract; and success, in whole or in part, with the services rendered having contributed to such success."

In the case of hiring someone to rescue the vessel, they could still consider it salvage except that their fee would be considered their portion of the salvageable value. In the case of the boat described by rgranger, probably a few hundred bucks.
