what do you call the nut thing on the magma grill mount that tightens it to the rail? you know, the piece that always falls off when you take the grill off! I can't figure out what boat us or west marine has it listed as.

Lever

That lever has a death wish! I've lost a couple of them. Somebody suggested taking a hammer and damaging the top of the thread to stop it coming off. I think it is Magma part 10-047, "Lever w/ Nylon Washer", West Marine # 206045 at top of page 837 in the 2002 catalog.

John and Derek: I would suggest that you take a chisle and damage the first one or two threads on the BBQ mount. Be sure that the washer and the lever are both on there before you do this. Another option would be to get a longer mounting rod and have a lock nut or two nuts on the end of the rod. Someone should recommend this to Magma.

A simple solution that I use is to put an acorn nut on the end of the threaded shaft. Tighten it up. It acts as a stopper so that you can't spin off the tightening lever and also prevents you from scratching your back when you inevitably knock your back or knee against it. I've been doing this for years. Now, don't anybody send this idea to "Things That Work" in SAIL magazine :)

but Paul, does that make it difficult to remove?

Paul: Does this not prevent you from removing the BBQ from the rail. I think that is what the others are talking about. I had a Magma. When you want to remove the BBQ the "wing" level almost falls off (in fact is will fall off if you are not careful). I have a Large Force 10.

Not for me...

...It allows me to unscrew the lever just enough to remove the bail and the whole grill. Also, I tend to leave mine permanently mounted on the stern rail during the season.

Another thing...

...that I've seen on charter boats is a simple nut that is used to hold the grill in place on the mount. Apparently, this is used because the lever was lost by another person.

I think that...

Magma makes all of its profits on that bit of bent stainless steel...

I agree, Derek...

Do you see what Magma gets for any replacement part or accessory for their grills?

Creativity

Now lets think about this. If that little lever keeps falling in the drink, lets tie a string around it that is attached to the deck rail and when you're too busy grabbing the grill to hang onto, the string will hang onto your lever. NOW, if we could just come up with a solution to hang onto those pesky little canisters of propane that keep landing in the drink, floating around the harbor that I need to jump in and retreive.

Split Ring

I drilled a hole in the end of mine and put a split ring through it. I can only think of one reason they do not come that way.

Ha Ha

It was indeed putting it on! Right before it turned off that final thread I thought to myself "I need to be careful or this thing will fall right into the water, Blooooop"

I have an extra if you want it...

...its at the bottom of Great Salt Pond at Block Island! (we do carry an extra though) We do have a stand so that we can use the grill at home outside during the winter. Make me feel like I'm sailing when I cook up some steaks in the rain. Russell S/V Allie Kat

what you guys need...

...is a 150 lb magnet to pick these grills off the bottom of the pond...

1000 years from now...

...I can see the archeologists puzzling over why the ocean floor is covered with pieces of stainless steel about 4" long and 3/4" wide with a threaded hole in one end... They will probably conclude that they are an ancient form of currency.

Actually, Derek...

It's all the grill covers that'll make 'em wonder just what size this race of people were, 'cuz they'll think those grill covers were shields! :) Wonder what they'll think we did with all those anchors we've lost....
