I am getting inconsistent reports of the post-katrina depths of Bayou Bonfouca. Does anyone know the current depths to the head of Bonfouca in Slidell? Also, it looks like it might be a decent hurricane hole. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I lost my CT 38 in Katrina and looking for a better place to hole up.

I think there is plenty of water in there all the way to the swing bridge. Have a friend who has his boat at Bayou Liberty, and he couldn't get out of there for a while after Katrina, but Bonfuoca Marina has plenty of water in it. Have a couple of friends who have boats in there. Don't know about it being a good hurrican hole, as lots of boats totaled in there during Katrina. I would recommend coming into Eden Isles, and anchoring mid canal. Thats where I had my boat for Katrina, and suffered no damage. Only boats in here that had any damage were a couple that were left tied to the dock. One sunk, and one ended up in the yard. There's plenty of room in the canals to anchor up, and they are fairly well protected from the wind by the houses. Your welcome to come over here. You can anchor up close to my house, and I will be whatever help I can.

Has Bonfouca changed its image?

I used to refer to it as the graveyard. Most boats that went in, never came out.
I wanted to go there many years ago but GF said she could not carry enough guns and mace cans for her to feel safe LOL.

Bonfucoa, has in some ways changed. It is a little junky, some of it still from Katrina, and part of it is just Bonfucoa. It's a kind of funky and very laid back place, and the people are mostly older. But a nice friendly atmosphere. They have Sunday morning breakfasts couple of times a month, and most of the time, several live aboards sitting under a shade tree telling lies. But there is nothing to make one feel unsafe, unless you are talking about some of the docks and piers.
