My 1985 H31 has recently started showing some signs of the dreaded compression post disease (water through the post when it rains and a sticky head door). At a minimum I'll need to pull the mast to reseal the wiring tube and stop water from coming into the cabin through the mast step. When the mast is pulled, I'll pull the interior teak and determine whether the post is rotten. I'm actually afraid to pull the teak before that because, from what I've read on these boards, it's possible that the teak is the only thing holding up the rig. I'm going to get an estimate for the work before I haul and have the mast pulled but I'd like to use a marina that has done one of these before. For those of you who have had this done in the Bay Area: where did you go, how much did it cost and how did you feel about the finished product? I'm in Alameda but am willing to spend a day getting to other parts of the Bay and/or close by Delta to get this done right. Thanks in advance!

This approach makes the project look doable

Here are pix from the photo forum. Having the yard do it is pretty expensive generally, depends on how much glass work needs to be done and what you replace the post with.

Walton's Marina in the Delta.

JT: We used Walton's Marina in the delta. I would not suggest that you have it done with the mast in place. Many times there is also rot in the cross member too. You should call John Preston at Walton's at Bruno Island and ask them for a quote. (916/777-6698) They did mine a few years ago and it turned out better than new. You can also contact me if you need any more information.

You can't remove the teak that covers the post. Its glued on by the factory. I had to use a tablesaw to rip cut the teak from the post in order to re-use the teak. The leak at the mast step needs to be repaired. In your case you'll have to drop the mast. The rest of the work, you can do yourself if you are handy with basic tools.

Re: Bay area yard for repair

back in 1997 I had a similiar problem with my Catalina 30. The deck under the mast step got wet over the years, and started to compress. I had it repaired by Mariner boat yard (Van Wegan owner). I don't remember the cost, but they cut out the fiberglass and wood under the mast step, and epoxied under the mast step and were able to complete the job without showing signs of repair. I was very pleased with their work. I changed out the standing rigging at the same time. You may have found that as the deck compresses, you needed to tighten the rigging to keep it taught... Talk to Mariner

I did not have this particular job done, but had some work done at Mariner Boatyard, just up the estuary from where you are, and was happy with the work. The yard manager and owner both made sure work was done right, and while it was not cheap,it involved completely sanding down the bottom and repairing the keel seam, I felt it was fair and the work well done. I watched them pull masts on other boats while I waited and they are all set up for that. IF you are an OYC member you may be able to get a discount. I'm sure KKMI in Richmond could do it too, but they are used to dealing with megayachts and could be pricey. Good luck Sanders
