Currently I have a CQR 35 lb. Too frequent dragging for me. Want to upsize to what? CQR 45?? change style. Opinions please. Bavaria says go bigger but can't advise about fit on bow.

Hi,

I have the 45# Suncore PlowMaster, stainless steel (316). It’s a CQR “type” with a swivel shank but beefier and with wider palms, It’s been a very good one for my Bavaria 38E. Works well with my bow roller and stows well. There are many other favorites in the forum. You may hear about ‘em.

Hi @boaterbob . You might consult a local expert. Steve, up in Port Townsend has been recording anchor testing for several years. His technique is particularly applicable to the local tidal changes that we enjoy in our NW Waters, but can play havoc with our sets.

Here is a link to his 100th video. A summary of experiences.

I had a 33lb Bruce on my boat when I purchased it. They are good anchors according to many of the local boaters. They do have compromises. After watching the Mantus anchor underwater results I chose a Mantus anchor and 105 ft of chain. I have been very pleased with the results. I still have the Bruce stowed aboard as a backup.

Most of the modern anchors provide fitting templates you can download. You print several pages, line them up on a large piece of cardboard, then cut around the tracing to get one 2D template that you can put on your roller to make sure things like the forestay and hull are clear. I used that when switching to a Mantus and it worked as expected.

I second Steve's anchor testing video's. They are well worth watching if you are looking for a new anchor. I would suggest looking into a more modern anchor than CQR. They make much better anchors these days. My personal preference is SPADE anchors but there are several companies making equally good anchors.

I would second the Spade as a good anchor for boats greater than 17K lbs displacement. They were just a little rich for my boat budget at the time back in 2016.
