does anyone know the length of the second and third battons from the top of the sail. I have a 1996 H26 with Doyle sails. I lost them in heavy weather last week. thanks for any help Dave Oberholtzer "Hydrotherapy"

I would have to assume you could order these from Hunter. I’ll be finding out myself soon, as I lost the third from the bottom. (I’d like to say that it was due to heavy weather too – but the truth of the matter is, it slid out the back of the boat when taking the sail off the boom.)

Try this
I'd like to know how many battens sit at the bottom of my bay (Narragansett Bay in RI). I've put several there myself. Try measuring the length of the batten pocket and buy one that fits. Mine are 1-5/8" wide, but varying lengths. West Marine or Boat/US sells batten material buy the foot in that size. Cut and fit. But they also sell pre-cut lengths in different widths. Try them online at either westmarine.com or boatus.com

After that...
...put a stitch in the opening of the batten pocket. This will keep them from falling out...except if you let the main flog. Then you may split the stitch and throw the batten out. That's what happened to me.

This is a constant problem which can be remedied for good. If you drill a small hole into the end of the batten and take a hot point to burn a very small hole in the sail where the hole is in the batten, a small line through both and then tied will stop the battens from flying out.

Shrinking Sails?
I had the same problem. After replacing several battens and cutting new to stick out of luff about an 1 1/4". I got smart and cut about 3/4" off and tied a couple of wraps of whipping twine around velcro retainer. The black tape around mast at top ,just above boom and on end of boom is to mark limits of sail. Just try to raise sail or outhaul to those marks with a 5 year old sail. I think it shrunk! I purchased from M&E Marine in 10' length and batten caps. Less expensive than cut to size. George Henry sv "Whatever"

One Inch Battens
About two years ago, I increased the size of my battens to one inch so that the lazy jacks would work better, but as an added plus I think I get a better sail shape. I now have one inch battens in the bottom three, and the orignal batten in the top. I also have added Batten Car Jr's. You can buy raw batten stock in 25 ft. lengths and cut as you need, this will make the three bottom battens. As to the sail shrinking, if you check past postings, I think you will find that the boat-rope along the edge of the sail is what is shrinking, and if you have Doyle sails they should fix it for you. Doyle repaired my sail last winter for no charge. There has been much posted on this form about the sails on the Hunter 26.
