I was fortunate to serve with the Wisconsin and Missouri on duty during the Gulf War. Although we never saw them, it was known that they were both in the Gulf and firing their big guns, plus launching Tomahawks. That was a big morale booster while we were out in the sand, just knowing they were out there.

The four Iowa class battleships were all 108' wide at extreme breadth in order to transit the 110' wide Panama Canal locks. Sparks would fly during the move through the locks. At a length of 887' she had a speed of 33kts that enabled her and her sisterships to keep up with the fast carriers.

Actually there were SIX with only four completed during the war. The bow of one of the other two was actually used to repair one of the four commisioned ships.
