With all the discussion on batteries lately, my thoughts turned to
battery maintenance. I have to remove the forward battery to service
the aft one, not a difficult job, but just one more thing to do.

A quick search on the web turned up this interesting watering system:
ROVER & ROVER Battery Single Point Watering System

Has anyone experience with watering systems?

Peter,

I imagine you are talking about the devices that are used to replace the
conventional caps that came with your flooded battery. The best known are
"Hydrocaps", but there is at least one other manufacturer if not more. I
have used these in the past before switching to the sealed battery.

What these caps do it to capture the gases that are emitted when the battery
does it thing, especially during a charging cycle. At this time the battery
emits vapors - mostly hydrogen. Since hydrogen is one of the main components
of water it has to come from somewhere and thus, the water level of the
battery tends to drop. The hydrocaps eliminate this since they have a
catalyst in them that recombines them with oxygen. They do work as I can
attest to by personal experience. One thing to note is that they are a
little taller than a conventional cap, so be careful of the vertical
clearance, especially it your batteries are under the cockpit sole as
clearance is limited. Since they contain a catalyst they can get a little
warm, but not hot.

You need to be sure you match the cap to your particular battery since not
all caps are the same. They aren't terribly expensive, but I couldn't give a
price as I bought mine a couple decades ago (before I went to sealed
batteries).

Thanks for the information, Chris.
On checking my clearence today, putting any other kind of cap on is
not an option. I was lucky to get the Golf Cart batteries in, after a
little Swiss Army knife surgery to the underside of the battery
compartment lip :)
