We recently purchased a 95 430 . This week when I was going to service the batteries, I switched the batteries to OFF. A few moments later my wife turned on a faucet and the pump stated to work. On all of our previous boats, when I turned off the batteries everything shut down. I then unplugged the shore power turned off the Heart inverter and we still had lights, water pump ect. The boat is equipped with (4) 8d wet cells, which I understand were added after the boat was delivered to the past owner..Bad switch, improper wiring???Any suggestions on where to start would be greatly appreciated

depends on which switch.

I'm assuming here that your 430 is similar in its wiring to my Passage 42. there is an inverter draw selector switch and a set of battery switches. the round inv dr sw merely denotes which battery the inverter will draw from. The two toggle type switches control the feed of 12v to the electrical panel. I think also the boat came with only 2 8Ds, at least my P42 did. If the others were added by the previous owner, be sure to check to see that they are wired through a the switches. Some other 430 owner could probably comment on the factory battery configuration. I wish i had 4 8ds in my P42 but I haven't found a location for additional units yet.

Additional 8D battery on P42

Bill, I added a third 8G8D battery to my P42. It is a gel and therefore never (or rarely) requires access. I put it under the aft bunk, just aft of the bulkhead which separates the rudder quadrant area from the fuel tank area. It fits just forward and a bit below the quadrant. The wires are easy to run under the floorboards right to the engine compartment. I bolted a couple of 2X4 boards to the bulkheads so I could set the battery in place, and strapped it down with some webbed belts with ratcheting locks. It works great. Let me know when you find the spot for the fourth battery.

Here's how it works on the 430

The other post regarding the P42 was correct in that it also applies to the 430. The large round Guest switch on the right as you face the panel is just for inverter draw. It does, I think, have one other fundtion, in that if it is set to both, even when the inverter is not being used, both batteries are linked together in parallel into one house bank, so if you want to operate each as a seperate bank, you must not use the "both" position on this switch. But the toggle switches in the middle of the panel supply 12 volts to the main circuit bus, either to the A or B breakers (only one can be selected at a time). For the life of me, I have no idea why there is an A and B selection here... it seems to make no sense, but that's what there is. Another interesting thing about the wiring that I discovered last summer is that you can start the boat with no starting battery installed! If you doubt this, just try it. I removed mime to use with my camper on a camping trip last summer, while the generator n the boat was being serviced. When I got back they said it ran just fine, and I was astonished, as I didn't think it could be started. They said it cranked up just fine! So I checked, and sure enough you can start the genset or the engine from the house batteries. something about drqwing voltage across the battery isolator. If anyone understands this better than I, I'd appreciate an explaination. George Kornreich S/V Fiddler

great spot but

I've got an air cond. unit there. A friend with a P42 has installed 2 6v golf cart batteries in boxes set on rails in the bilge. the rails rest on the small ledge. this is right underneath the bench. That's 200ah but I'm not sure it's vented enough for my taste.

I posted a diagram of the switch wiring and a discussion in the photo forum.
