They're great!

What are you sailing? what are your needs? I have two group 31 AGM batteries for my house batteries. they last about five years. Cost about 250 dollars and I never look at them from the day I install them until I replace them. If you want to baby sit some expensive batteries go ahead, I don't care, but if you are just pleased that when you flip on a switch and the lights come on then go with batteries that take care of them selves.

I'm sure many or most will not agree with me, but I use the Max batteries from Wally World. The yellow ones. They have served me well for several years now, have a no questions 18 month replacement, and are priced right. I think the current price is around 65 bucks.

Trojans. As an aside, several years ago I sent my daughter to Walmart to get a battery. She came back with the right one and it was dead. I took it back to the store and they got me another battery. It too was dead. The manager tested the entire rack of batteries and all 46 were dead.

I have used

Napa, both in my golf car, and for the boats two battery setup. In both places they have been very good. Price around 65 bucks, plus or minus a few bucks depending on you turning in your old ones for the Core deposit.

I just gotta ask

Compared to the cost of batteries how much do you spend for the care and feeding of the entertainment systems on your boat?

Save and buy Interstate deep cycle

Save your self a lot of bucks and locate your nearest Interstate Wholesaler. Interstate deep cycle batteries, model U2200 are made for them by US Batteries. These are excellent batteries at a cost of about $55 each. This model has the same specs as Trojan T105 at about half the cost. They are reated at 225 AH and weigh 63 lbs, have a grey top. The Trojan 105 weighs 61 lbs and also 225 AH. I did a lot a research a few years back on these two batteries and i found the Trojans were over rated. I have had 4 U2200 batteries for two seasons and they are just like new. Some Costo Stores also handle these batteries. They have the US Battery label with red tops and are US2200

Kapt'n Jack, I use to inspect a battery plant

that is here in So. Cal., they make batteries for aircraft including current fighters. May be expensive but worth looking into them. Their link is attached, was a family owned and run factory and pretty accomodating.

Optima does not offer much capacity!

While i would agree that Optima batteries are very fine quality, I would not agree that they are suitable for any sustained capacity. We have an Optima for our starting battery and then we have 3 group 31 AGM for housekeeping and refrigeration needs. The Optima group 31 is rated at 75 amps vs. 100+ for most other Group 31's.
