Time to replace my sealed lead acid batteries of 2 x 100Ah on my Hunter 38.
I would to go for a 300 Ah bank, or maybe even more, so my question is what is better:
1 x 300 Ah (if these exist) or
3 x 100 Ah or
4 x 75 Ah.
In other words, as many batteries as possible or as little as possible....?

Depends

one large bank and a start battery is what I have and I really like my
4-6 volt trojans batteries and I have a start battery for my Gen and Yanmar.

Really good question - one I did not ask when I redid my batteries! I have a 2 battery 240AH bank and a separate start battery. I would think that the upfront cost is one consideration. A second consideration is space for the bank (my big concern). Third thought would be that with a multi battery bank you should replace them all when you replace one so that they stay matched. So when one goes bad .... you buy a new set. A quick search did not show a 300AH single battery. And on the site I looked at the larger AH sealed batteries seem to be about the same cost as 2 smaller ones with same total AHs, so back to available space. Sorry not an answer for you but lots to think about. There was a big discussion on this site a couple of years ago about Sam’s club batteries - you might want to search for it.

The Best Suggestion .....................

Time to replace my sealed lead acid batteries of 2 x 100Ah on my Hunter 38.

.................. would be to get non-sealed lead acid batteries if you're willing to do the maintnenace on them. Sealed batteries are just not that sealed and eventually go low on electrolyte.

If they're maintenance batteries, you get to keep the electrolyte up. Not a big deal though, maybe two - three times during the summer each year.

Not a single battery as you would need redundancy. Me personally if I wanted a 300ah battery bank I would get three 100ah batteries. I would connect two in parallel to position "A" of a battery switch and then a single to position "B". That way I would maintain redundancy and could combine all three if needed at the turn of the switch. You should have the space for them in a boat your size and as far as the weight your other options would weigh around the same.
