In checking the water level in my batteries i noticed the secondary battery was listed as a group 27D, trolling motor and accessory battery, with a reserve power rating of 160 minutes. my question is what advantage (if any) is obtained by having a battery not rated for a cranking power of .... say 650 cranking amps? if i should replace this battery should i go for one with the highest amps? of course i'm talking marine deep cycle battery. any thoughts? steve mac26x "heard the call"

cranking vs deep cycle

Steve: Depends on what you require in a battery. Deep cycle batteries do not have the cranking power for the huge amperage draw to start an engine. Batteries with high cranking amperage will not perform well in supplying amp draw for long periods of time. Suggest you consider a cranking/deep cycle combo battery as a compromise. Good Luck!
