I have a 1986 O'Day 272 with only 1 battery located in the starboard cockpit locker. I am planning on installing a 6 gal. hot water heater as far back (toward the stern) in this locker as possible. This location is being selected so as not to lose much of the locker space. In addition, I want to add a second battery. I am thinking of moving the battery location to under the starboad salon seat. I think ventalation may be a problem in this location. Any ideas?

On my 89 272le both batteries were ...
mounted on a shelf at the back of the port berth. Absolute hell to check or move. I moved them both to that compartment under the starboard salon seat. Ran the wires under the stove storage area, sort of through the engine compartment and moved the switch to the forward plywood wall in the starboard cockpit locker. Real easy to check water now ... second year. and they are now located low and center offsetting the water tank. I used a piece of that round swimming tube {about 2 inches or so}under the batteries to sort of distribute the weight and hold the batteries level. And sort of screwed a small strip of cutting board over the battery case straps into the front lip of the compartment to hold the batteries tight in the compartment. Didn't notice any difference sailing though. I think a lot of boats seem to have batteries in what looks like a confined area ... I wonder if there is much proven danger from the gasses? When I charge them off AC I leave the compartment open ... but I don't think the normal engine charge creates much gas.

Good to see you're still around. You kicking around more in Naples these days? Or are you still up in Newport most of the time? As you know, I stay in Ida Lewis every time I'm in Newport. Hadn't seen your boat there in quite awhile. You didn't give up that mooring, did you? Let me know if you do, I'd love to hang my boat there. thanks for all the info. I checked out the location of the water heater on your old boat. If the steering system comes together, I'll probably place the heater in that location. I plan on moving both batteries to the starboard salon seat. This will make it easier for me to check and remove. An added benefit will be the weight added to the starboard side will help counter the water tank on the port side.

Hey Don ... I am still 6 months in NPT. ...
Six in Naples ... two boats ... now I get depressed twice a year as I move from one to the other. But the depression is really short and I have to relearn how to go from a wheel to a tiller. Re: That RUBBER BOOT. What a piece of junk ... I have had it ripped for the last 5 years and dread having to take all those bolts out just to replace it. Maybe I will order one and bite the bullet. I can hardly wait to see the price. See you in Newport in August. Vic
