IM THINKING OF MOVING BATTERY TO THE LOCATION WHERE THE H2O IS ON AN 88 22, UNDER THE V BERTH, WE DONT USE THE THE WATER AND I CAN RELOCATE A SMALL TANK FOR THE SINK JUST IN CASE I NEED IT. MY OVERALL OBJECTIVE IS TO GET SOME WEIGHT OFF OF THE STERN. I DO USE A SOLAR CHARGER ON THE MOORING AND IT WOULD BE EASER TO RUN THE WIRE TO THE BOW AND INSTALL IT PERMINTLY. MY ? IS SHOULD I HAVE THE BATTERY IN THE CABIN WHERE WE SLEEP???? THANKS IN ADVANCE JIM P

solar panel?

I am not sure about your battery. I would'nt think there would be any problem with moving it at least from a safty point of view. Just make sure that you have it secured. I do have a question about your solar pannel. I just bought a c22 and am considering puting a solar panel on it. How do you like it? Is it sufficient to keep the battery charged. I will be running my depth meeter, knot meeter, vhf and am/fm on the weekends. I was hoping that it would be enought to charge the battery over the week.

What type of battery?

Thanks to the West Marine catalog I can offer the following... - Gel Battery - totally enclosed, place battery in any orientation, no gasses, expensive. - AGM Battery - enclosed, place battery in any position except upside down, very small gas discharge, somewhat pricey. - Flood Battery - not enclosed, refill with distilled water, place only right side up, gas discharge, cheapest. Gas and small, enclosed, poorly ventilated places always make a poor mix. I would err on the side of caution, and leave the battery where it is. SJK SENDS

Solar Panel

Hi all, I use a solar panel on my Cat.22 to keep battery up. I sail every Sat. and my son sails boat every Tuesday. Battery always fully charged! And we run radio and fishfinder all time on boat. Do not know amp output on panel but westmarine should be able to make sure you do not over buy on output. P.S. love my Fin keel 79 Catalina have had it since Dec. I will move on to bigger boat but, wow is this a great boat to just kick around on , low maint. and well made! We bay sail mostly, but have had it out past Point Loma twice and it felt great in open water! Best to all, Jack

Some Solar Panel Thoughts

Jim: I charge my battery with a solar panel when we are not on the boat. One of our customers sent us a big panel with a small defect in one of the cells, so I got it for free. I just place it in the cockpit on the floor during the week, and by the next weekend, the battery is fully charged. I do have a regulator in the circuit, since the panel is so big. It's about 14 inches x 43 inches. It is really nice having the battery fully charged when you get to the boat. I worried a lot about the gas from my battery on the boat, before I started using the solar panel. I had planned to run vent hoses from the caps of my batteries out to the vents that vent the sail compartment, near where the gas can is (on my 1980 C-22). But I have never smelled anything from my batteries when we get on our boat after it has been charging for a week. When I charge the batteries with the charger (as I do when we are sailing for a week or more), I try to keep the boat as open as possible, so any fumes would go out of the boat. I try not to charge the battery with the charger with the boat completely sealed, and us sleeping in it. Anyway with a solar panel, you probably won't be simultaneously sleeping on the boat, with it sealed up, and the solar panel charging the battery. Aldo

You Still Have To Have A Battery

You do not want a battery under your V berth. That part of the boat takes a beating from wave action and it is a lot of weight concentrated on a small area of a thin hull. Keep it in the rear where it belongs and store other items in the front. You also have the danger of hydrogen gas migrating into the V berth and cabin area. Lots of Luck

The Battery..

I don't think a battery in the V-birth would be a good idea. Batteries vent hydrogen, which is explosive. Also, if it's a flooded type battery the sulpheric acid (electrolyte) will somehow get out of the battery and ruin things around it. It’s probably best to keep the battery where it is.

THANKS

SORRY ........ OUT OF TOWN FOR A FEW DAYS. THANKS FOR YOUR ADVISE ON MY BATTERY DELEMA. I THINK I WILL KEEP THE BATTERY WHERE IN WAS DESIGNED TO BE. AS FAR AS SOLAR PANELS I PURCHASED MINE FROM W MARINE AND LOVE IT. I DONT HAVE IT MOUNTED SO I LEAVE IN ON THE DECK OR ON THE COCKPIT SEAT WHEN ON THE MOORING. AS FAR AS LOOSING SOME WEIGHT ON THE STERN I THINK I (WE) SHOULD LAY OFF OF THE MARGRITIAS AND LOOSE SOME WEIGHT... HAPPY SUMMER

Solar/battery

I have been using a solar panel for several years..its the only way to go. As for moving the batery forward...i don't think i would do it. Yes there is the danger of hydrogen gas...but it makes it hard to service...adding water etc. Plus you would have to run some heavy gauge wire to feed the electrical system. And the way these boats are wired...you don't need any more splices. As it is, most electrical systems i have seen need to be rewired. This is one area where i think catalina could have done a better job FWIW. I am going to add another deep cycle battery to my boat..and may go for a small gel cell...just as a back-up for the nav lights and vhf. Bill "Nameless" 79' c22 Pt.Orange,FL
