Battery location & relocation

I own a 2001 Hunter 240. The first day of sailing those cheap little plastic cleats Hunter used to tie my battery down broke. The battery tumbled on to the mattress, soaked the mattress with acid, and tumbled back. I lost the mattress and had to use a baking soda solution on the inner hull sump. I also found out the bilge pump is not mounted properly at the lowest point of the hull. I moved the battery above deck and placed it beside the fuel tank, where it probably should have been in the first place. Before you sail a 240 make sure that battery is secure.

Er.....

You sure it is a good idea to put the battery next to the fuel tank? Seems a little dangerous to me.

Battery Problem

Steve, The same thing happen to me. What a mess to clean-up. I did the same thing you did, lot's of baking soda and new cushions. I made some stainless steel cleats and screwed them into the battery deck. I wouldn't put the battery in the same locker as the gas tank. Gas fumes and sparks don't seem like a good combination. Also, the bildge pump is not supposed to be in the lowest part of the boat. You want it raised a little so it doesn't get clogged when running.

When I had my 1998 H240 the battery was under the starboard settee. Did where did Hunter move the battery to.

Location of my battery

I have a 1999 240. My battery is inside behind the aft bunk. Unfortunately, you have to lift the battery over the aft bunk divider (a low wall separating the bunk from the extream back of the boat) while laying on your back. Boy- did I twist the Heck out of my back putting me out of commission of several weeks. Be careful to anyone installing or servicing their battery in this location. Anyway, its mounted in a battery box which is secured to the Hull.
