I have recently purchased 1990 26D Macgregor Sail Boat. It did not have a battery

I have no idea where the battery is supposed to be located and what type of Battery and volts to purchase.

I am not sure If I should try to install my self or just have a marina perform the service. I would appreciate any feedback you have.
Thanks
Ron

Your battery shoudl go under the sink

I rewrired my boat (26S) because the electrical system was pretty pathetic.

Your batter shuodl mount under the sink, though.

All you really need is a basic 12 volt marine battery which you can get at Walmart.

Under the sink you may (or may not) find some mounting hardware and a black/ red wire to connect to the battery.

Mine is in the lazarette

Mine is setup in the lazarette, which I don't like, because that is where my gas tank is too. Electricity and gas vapors don't sound like a good mixture to me. But it makes it easy for the motor cables to reach it.

I've plans to move it to either under the sink or under the V birth. But the wiring is a real pain to mess with so this has not been a high priority yet. I may just move the gas tank and keep it outside in the motor well. Probably safer that way anyway.

Regarding what kind of battery you want a deep cycle 12 volt marine battery.

opinions

most people default to a 12v marine battery. I have an AGM battery because it has zero maintenance or outgassing. Another option is to wire in 2 6v golf cart batteries. Your mileage may vary.

IIRC, factory installed batt under stb seat

I have a 1988 D, and the factory wiring was for a starboard seat install.

(2 eyebolts thru seat side to keeep it in place).

I added 1 and moved both 2 under sink.

-some move it under the V berth, for better weight distribution.

I have 2 (wallmart) grp 27 wet cell, deep cycles, but wish I had gotten the AGM's.

factory wiring is junk... simple lamp cord.

Battery

Ron; Some PO moved battery in my boat to under the V-berth opposite the head bulkhead. Since our boats tend to get stern heavy, motor, fuel, people, I think getting battery as far forward as you can is good idea. IMHO.
