I am starting my work to get the boat ready for another season. I have a new battery and box ready to install. I notice the wooden blocks where the battery hold downs attach are soft and kind of rotten. They seem to be fiber glassed or epoxied in. Sould I break them out with a hammer & chisel then grind down to clean glass and re-epoxie? Should I use oak or ply wood or other? I don't want to make a mess out of it. You folks have helped me out many times in the past and any help will be appreciated.

Phil, if you can get some locust wood use that

Yes, get rid of the rotted wood and clean up the mess. I like to lay some glass over any wood that I attach to the hull. It just provides a bit more contact aera.

Agree With Ross

I totally agree with Ross on this. Get rid of the old rotten stuff. How you do it is mostly a matter of choice, and ease of access. I have a Makita cut off grinder I use for stuff like this. But beware, it gets you all itchy from the glass, if you aren't covered good. Replace it with a minimum of marine plywood, better stuff if you can get it. A little 5200 under and some stainless screws should hold it in place as long as the wood holds up.
