HOW Editorial

How often do you check the water level in your wet call batteries? Do you check each time you visit your boat, occasionally, or seldom? Is your prudence limited by access to the power source, or are your batteries easy to reach? Contribute your opinions here, then go to the home page and vote in this month's Quick Quiz, currently in progress.

Battery Life

Any battery that can have its water level checked should really be checked before every use. Just like all the fluid levels in the engine and transmission. Battery electrolyte evaporates and is reduced from charging. High temperature can also cause a decrease in "water" level. If the top plates of a battery are ever exposed to air, that portion and storasge capability of the plate is lost forever. I personally check my batteries about once a month - or evey fourth trip to the boat. Ones use of the boat should determine how often the batteries get checked.

Charged

If you leave your boat hooked up to shore power for the battery charger to maintain fully charged batteries, you better check your electrolye levels regularly and often.

Water level check

On my 260 it was difficult to check, so I installed an electical switch available here in S. CA. It takes the place of one of the battery caps, and it monitors water level. I wired it up to my main electical panel, and it's just a press to test switch. A green light indicates a good water level. Much better than the old method of a flashlight and mirror! Dan, need more info

Since my 340 requires mirrors and flashlights, Dan could you give us specifics on the little green light. If the address doesn't include little green men on Mars, I would be quite interested in that product.

To Dakota Jim

Jim I found this product at Redondo Beach Marine. I believe it is made by a local company. If you can't call them direct, next time I'm in there, I get the name of the company, and their address, and post it. Dan

Bryan

Sounds like a good emporium item.

I'd be interested in it too.

Emporium Item

I agree with Bryan that it would be a great Emporium item. Dan, I would really appreciate knowing the name of the company and I'll contact them. Could you send me an email at bly@c-2.com. Thanks!

Thanks Dan

Thanks Dan. Let's see if Bly can get this in the emporium. If not, I'll be crying for the address and phone #. Jim

Battery Check Solution

An even better solution is to buy some special battery caps that catch the condensation and drip it back into the battery. They cost about $5.00 each so I haven't hunted them down. Along with the electrical alarm that would seem to be foolproof.
