Battery Charging

Hi All, Just replaced the starter battery (1 x 12 Volt) on our '91 H30T... As I was replacing it, one of the dock watchers told me I should be making sure I charge the starter battery separate from the house batteries (2 x 6 Volts in series). (Turn one off while charging the other, then vice/versa.) When I tried to do this I found out all the engine instruments were running off the start battery. The Knot Meter, Depth Finder and Auto Pilot all run off the house batteries. Problem is, when charging one with the other off, I have to do without the indicators one or the other. Is there a way to isolate the batteries for charging from the items powered? What comes to mind is running a direct circuit to the DC Bus... Is it advisable to run a direct connetion from the voltage regulator direct to the DC bus?.... or is this a bad idea? Any ideas?

will tell you about batteries and charging them. I still use the old one/all/two/off switch and place the selector on all when I am running the engine. Isolating the batteries is supposed to be better, but I am not going to worry about it unless I start having battery trouble.
