I have a 1984 Hunter 34. I recently discovered that the battery charger is wired into the starboard electrical outlets. In other words, I have to turn on the starboard outlets (when plugged into shore power) to charge the batteries. This, of course is separate from the alternator that also charges the batteries. Is this standard or is this something the previous owners rigged up? The power panel is not labeled in any way to suggest that the starboard outlet switch is also the battery charger. All you H34 peeps give me a shout!

i am not a 34 kinda peep ....but that battery charger should be on its on breaker and circuit

Boat did not come with a battery charger so that is a dealer or previous owner modification. My previous owner or dealer installed mine on a dedicated breaker on the AC panel. Attached picture of panel. The breaker that is second from bottom is the battery charger and the bottom most one is the air conditioner.

I have a 34 that I just recently purchased. The battery charger is by itself on the bottom breaker and is labeled with a piece of paper and tape. I assumed this breaker was originally a spare or some equipment that is no longer on the boat. In any case, there is no reason it should be piggy backed on the outlet circuit unless your panel has had a lot of things added.

Mine is not hard wired but rather the PO used heavy duty extension cord to plug into the Starboard outlelt. This is on the plan for correction. I sail off a mooring and have only used shore power once so it is not a big issue. But I will go with an independent circut and breaker when I get to it. PO had an interesting perspective on wiring.

Same as the others, I ran a fresh wire from the electrical panel and installed a new circuit breaker in one of the empty spots. You can see the box I put in down in the basement next to the original battery location. I used rub on letters to identify it.
