I'm relocating the batteries on my Hunter 34 from the starboard lazarette to underneath the galley sette where the water heater is located. Since they will be inside the cabin is it still desireable to place them inside a battery box? I will have them tied down but for space reasons would prefer to do without the boxes. TIA.

I would stick with the boxes

I would stick with the boxes if at all possible. batteries can still leak. Is there no way you can get the batteies over to the port side- depending on how many bateries you have you could eliminate the H34 starboard list. Best of the season

They should be in some sort of a tray or box

to contain any leaks and they should have a non conducting shield on top of them . Depending on how many and how big you may be up setting the trim.

What about this?

I'm actually trying to eliminate the list. I believe if I place them as far to the port side in that sette as possible (looking forward) they will actually be mostly over the keel. There is an access hole inside that sette to one of the keel bolts. My plan is to place the batteries over the top of that hole. Currently the water heater is located over the access. Then I'll move the water heater outside of the batteries. I have three house batteries that can fit in there. The starting battery will then fit under the galley sink up tight to the port side (looking forward) which is right next to the aft keel bolt. I'm thinking this will help to correct the list by centering the weight a bit better. I can also keep my port water tank amidships. It may not be perfect but I think it will go a long way in helping to get rid of the list. What do you think? Joe

Keep the cable run to the starter as short as

practical. Otherwise you may have to increase your cable size.

Not sure it is enough weight to port

My thinking would be that if the current 2 degree or so list requires more weight further to port. I have stood on the port rail and that seems to about cancel the list ( 220lbs- more today after Christmas dinner!) Fred is the expert on retrimming h34s- what do you think Fred? Ideally I would put the batteries where the port side water tank is.

Batteries in the cabin?

Joe, Please be aware that if these are flooded batteries you will get an odor from the acid when they are charging and in high enough concentration it can become explosive. Adequate ventilation needs to be provided. Also, ABYC standards require that flooded batteries be contained ie: in a box. Dennis W. S/V Fulsailed

In the cabin

My Nassau 34 has 3 batteries in the cabin under the quarter berth and I never smell them. Surveyor and two CC aux inspectors never raised any concern. Certainly, if one could smell them it would time for worry.

Battery Box

My 1981 Mirage 27 when I purchased her a few yrs ago had the batteries under the stove, The surveyor had an issue with it due to the current standards, re the issue of gassing and explosions. I created a plywood box and placed it into a sail locker and vented it. I coated the box with epoxy in case of an acid spill, and also keep the batteries in shallow plastic boxes.
