Couple of years and replace them.

Mike: They will probably last 2-3 years and then you will need to toss them. If you want to invest in a system, think about some Trojan 6v flooded or even AGM or Gels. Much longer service life and a lower overall cost of ownership. Regardless of which path you take, you need to invest in a good charger. It will even make the cheapo batteries last longer.

A friend of mine says

Before spending mucho denaro try to evaluate your needs based on cruising style. I have used two GNB golf cart (GC-2) batteries for the last eight year. They are generic GC-2, lead acid, 6v, 220 amp-hour reserve @ 70 amp draw batteries. I've been out for 4 days with family and continuous cabin hotel & instrument loads without charging and still had 55% capacity. These are big, heavy duty batteries. They are wired in series (12v) and make a great house bank. I don't have a starting bank (outboard is hand crank) They have served me well and are VERY cost effective ($30 @ Sams in 1996), but do require continuos monitoring and diligence.

Charging methods

I was also looking at using golf cart batteries but saw they were 6v. Can I just wire 2 in series then use standard 12v chargers? Also I have a wind generator, solar panel and are about to repower the boat with a 100amp alternator, how do I connect all three charging sources to the house and starting batteries?

Franklin a 4d box is about 22.5 in. a t105 trojan batter is 10./1/8 in. so two batteries will fit in the box. I just replaced 2 4ds with 4 t105 nice fit . I paided $80 per battery. regards Ken

We Have Sam's Batteries and they Work FIne

We cruise the Bahamas and south Florida aboard Endless Summer (h31). So far, for a house bank we have had four Sam's golf cart batteries. This next season we plan to have six of them. They have worked great for us. We have three 55 watt solar panels and a 20 amp wind generator. With this setup and the Sam's batteries, we are totally energy self sufficeient. Later.
