We bought a West Marine

starting battery for our M25 on our 1986 C34. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/10001/-1/10001/52715/10001/677/207/9 Model #1196708 (bottom line of page above) Middle of the pack in size and cost, works just fine. Just make sure all of your connections are clean and tight. We had one like it before this one that lasted over five years. They're now sealed.

As many...

as you can buy!!! No such thing as too many amps. I'd shop around for as many CCA (cold cranking amps) as possible for your budget and space available. Oh, and I'm sorry, "Worst Marine" is the LAST place I'd buy a battery unless I had no other choice.

You don't need much of a battery

for starting. It is an 11 HP engine for heavens sake! You MIGHT be pulling a whole 50 amps with the engine locked. A riding mower battery would be fine. With that said I think the constraint is the AH of the battery not the CCA. While more AH is better you need to size the battery to the charging system and you personal usage of the electrical power while on the boat and the size of the battery box. I have an excel spread sheet that can shine some light on the charging/power usage/battery size issues. If you would like a copy email me. roosaw@saic.com BTW I owned a Catalina 30 with the same motor.

See Practical Sailor, a few months back they did a pretty good comparison of the batteries available. They rated the Trojan Group 27 as best in field.

Cranking amps

I am in total agreement with honeyman. Get all you can get. You can have a battery too small, can't have one too big. Once more I have to plug wally world. Their top of the line starting batteries have a three year replacement warranty, no questions asked.

I got a good deal

WM had a Grand Opening sale in my home town. They offered a 650 cca batteries for $39.99 on special. Well, when I got there, they were out of them so they gave me an 800 cca battery for $39.99. Not a bad deal. Oh, my 15hp gas engine (two stroke twin cylinder) says 100 amps cranking. Don Casey says 4 times cranking amps for a starting battery size.
