Thanks for the info on the differant battery types, here's some new questions, Where should I look for a deal on the agm batteries? Do you folks find the local boating store as cheap as anyplace or are there deals on-line. Is one manufacturer better then others? And finally, my guest battery charger "hummms" all the time I am plugged into shore power, is that normal or should it shut off when the batteries are fully charged? thanks, jack

Do yourself a favor!

Jack: Do yourself a favor and get a new battery charger when you replace your batteries. I suggest a Xantrex Statpower 20+ or 40+ depending on your requirements.

Excellent Article on Batteries

Check the Spring edition of Boatworks (by SAIL mag) for an excellent article on "Preventing Battery Failure" by Nigel Calder. It discusses types, recharging, chargers.

More Battery Info

Here's a link to a very extensive article on batteries and related issues. Also, to expand on Steve's comment, the most probable reason that your charger hums is that it is an older style charger and not a modern, solid state, multi-stage charger. If left on, the old-style chargers will eventually destroy your batteries, whereas a musti-stage charger will not.

Jack Here's another link. You need to start thinking of the batteries as part of a SYSTEM. Also download and read the Ample Power Primer at www.amplepower.com. Also read up at JackRabbit Marine. Lots of material out there. Stu

Stu, thank you for pointing me

to the Ample Power site (in my other posts about my battery questions!... The Ample Power primer was a wealth of info. I think I am on my way to a fairly well thought out system! Thanks again! David
