I am new to sailboats and recently purchased one needing batteries. I had the Gel Cell type because of the space they were housed in required them to be on their sides. These babies were of the 4D size, and the first set cost about $550. Three weeks later I was replacing them with two more. The charger that came with the boat was bad, and overcharged the batteries to the point of no recovery. Soooo, they can be overcharged, but still have the advantage of working where lead-acid types will not.
