I purchased a 1977 30 and i want to replace the refrigerator that is installed.its dead. I have heard that I should consider changing the way the batteries operate, also that going to multiple 6 volt batters instead of 2 12vs. I am a novice so bear with me. i do not have an ampmeter.

Batteries are for energy storage, and refrigerators are one of the loads. You need to calculate how much comes out of your house bank, and how much goes in. See: Energy Budget: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,3976.0.html There's a link in that topic to how much goes back in called Battery Acceptance.

For wiring of your system, see Reply #11, here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4949.0.html

A very good tutorial on batteries is the Ample Power Primer, download it from the tech tab here: www.amplepower.com

The West Marine Advisors, online and in their catalogs have some very good information, too, for free.

The very best thing you can do, unless you inherently understand amps and electrical energy and flow, is to invest in a battery monitor. Victron is a very competitively priced source. See Reply #30 here: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/elect...on-modest-electrical-system-3.html#post616498
