I have the standard mainsail on my 356, i.e., not the automatic furler. The sail cover has pockets for battens, but there appears to be some confusion over whether the battens are standard equipment or not. Has anyone addressed this? By the way, I really love the full main and I'm glad I didn't get the furler.

Home Depot

Go to Home Depot (or equivalent) and get four 1/2" PVC pipes (about $6 max) and shove in from the front of the batten pocket. When one is almost all the way in, duck tape the second pipe to it and push in until it is at the back of the pocket and cut off the extra to use as a blowgun for powerboats and jet skis. On my 380 they are 14' long on each side. I put them in when the sail was in the bag and it took some wiggling and extra hands to get it to go in. Helps get the big sail into it and it is one of the cheaper upgrades you can make to the boat. I asked my dealer what the pockets were for and he didn't know. So I got on this site and got the above answer at the beginning of the season.

What is the purpose?

Paul: What is the purpose of battens in a "SAIL COVER"? Maybe I am missing something here. How would you store the cover when you remove it to sail?

..in a Stow-Pac style cover that stays on while sailing. You have the option of rolling it up and strapping it to the boom or just leaving it deployed hanging from the lazy-jacks. Rick D.

356 sail cover

according to my dealer (before I went in mast) the battens come from the factory-you should have received them with the boat-then you just pull the cover up around the sail

Resolution

I called Hunter's hotline. The cover is supposed to come with battens which are -- surprise! -- lengths of 1/2" PVC pipe. Hunter said the battens should have come with the boat, and they'll cover the cost of my buying them from the local Ace Hardware.
