batten question

I just took the 22 out for the 3rd time and am becoming more comfortable and familiar with it, but had a question:

How do you keep the battens from working their way out of the sail?
On my Hobie, we had strings that fit into a slotted batten cap, and locked them in. I don't see anything like that on the Catalina 22 sail.

Am I missing something obvious?

thanks

Usually there's a flap at the end that is secured with velcro or a string. What does yours look like..?

mine has a flap with a loop string that I push in (quite a ways) into the batten pocket I use the shorter of the battens to push in the rest.

But without seeing yours it's hard to say.

I had a problem with one of my battens working out last summer. I also have a flap with a loop string on them that are held in with (old) Velcro. I got a short strip of new Velcro with adhesive on one side. I stuck it over the end of the batten with about 4 inches on each side. I slid the batten back in and tucked the flap over the batten into the pocket. It didn't work it's way out for the rest of the summer. I'm planning on adding a strip of Velcro to the ends of all my battens this summer. I'll see how they hold up and will let you know.

Elastic stretchers

Some sails have elastic stretchers sewed into the far end of the batten pocket, these sails also have a v shaped entrance for the batten. On these sails make sure your batten is long enough to stretch this elastic to add tension to the batten by forcing the outside end of the batten to be tight against the outside end of the pocket. Using narrow batten in this type of pocket the end may slip off the elastic and the batten will become loose in the pocket. Purchase batten ends to make the batten wider on each end to make better contact at the ends of the batten pocket.
