I've got a 79 Catalina 38, the v-berth has a nice big hatch but its solid -no light. Does anyone know of someone that might offer an alternative? Its a custom double curved shape so I can't just stick a regular aftermarket one on. I would just install a smaller hatch in the existing one but the surface is too curved. I also thought about cutting a big hole in it then forming and bolting on a nice thick piece of plexi or lexan. Any ideas? The bat cave is cozy and all but I need to get some light in there. Does anyone have any experience with those prizim things?

on the foredeck of my boat, I have 2 4inch deck prisms that lay flush witht the deck. (I also have lexan window siting flush in the hatch as well) but the deck prisms work well at letting light into the v berth

You may or may not like this idea, but I have done this to my past two boats. A Beckson screw-in deck plate with a clear insert lets quite a bit of light below, is easy to intall, is cheap, and looks like it belongs there. I have installed these in my foredeck to let light into the v-berth, as well as in the cockpit, to let light in the quarter berths. I have had a total of 6 of these on two boats, with no problems and no leaks. When they get too beat up or scratched, you can just go buy another one and replace the screw-in insert. Look in your WM catalog. They come in 4, 6, and 8 inch versions. Even the 4 inch lets a lot of light below. Try it, you'll like it.
