Basic Question

Again the newb speaks, I have a super basic question, where do I find a "list" of all the rules and regs? I know the CG obvious one, who do I contact for state specific stuff? (WA)I have been purusing the web, and am now just more confused, it will be next season until we have her out , but I like to be on top of things.I know the basics, lights, PFD's, noisemaker, fire extinguisher, etc. What about radio? and more? Anyone have some tried and true sights?

I think the document you want is called collregs

collision regulations. Google it for starters, you may be able to find a downloadable version. Its thick. Any good marine reference will have this info however... chapmans boating as earlier mentioned, and Annapolis book of seamanship being another stand by. Check your local bookstore or library, but colregs is what you want.

Gotta agree with Ross

Gotta agree with Ross on this one. Go buy Chapmans big blue book. My latest is the 62nd edition. Almost 700 pages and covers more stuff than you can imagine.

Another idea

In addition to Chapman's (a very good book) I don't think you will find they cover state specific law. Most states have there own boaters guide or some other publication that give all there state specific info as well as general info. Might be available thur you motor vehicle department or what ever state agency deals with boats and boating in general. I know here in Connecticut (my home state) there are available (free) all over, boat show, marinas, EPA office ,boating stores etc etc. Connecticut issues a new edition every year with any and all updated rules or law changes,state specific as well as federal.

Cheat Sheet

Any big bookstore has a rack with plasticized cram courses in Algebra, Trig, English Grammar, Spanish, etc. Like a short version of the Dummies series. Look for cards on boating safety and the like. If they don't have it, they can order it. A little knowledge is a wonderful thing.

You should take a basic sailing and seamanship course from the Power Squadron or USCGA.
